Gabriel Somi says goodbye to Ostersunds; are the Revolution and MLS next?

Postby admin » Sat Jan 06, 2018 2:30 am

After reports in mid-December linked 26-year-old Syrian-Swedish defender Gabriel Somi with a potential move to the New England Revolution, the player has said his goodbyes at Swedish club Ostersunds FK.

Back on December 17, Swedish outlet Nerikes Allehanda first reported that Somi will sign for New England and on a post on the Ostersunds official club site, the player mentioned that he's "looking forward to a real adventure in the United States."

No official word from the New England Revolution, who are led by new head coach Brad Friedel. The clubs has plenty of work to build a 2018 squad with just 16 players currently under contract.

Somi has spent the last two years with Swedish first-division club Ostersunds FK. He made 15 appearances for the club in 2017, recording three goals and three assists while playing as a left back and left winger. His last match for the club came in a 1-1 Europa League tie at Hertha Berlin on December 7, which saw the Swedish side finish second in Group J and advance to face Arsenal in the Round of 32.

He’s never played in a full international match, but Somi, who was born in Sweden but is of Syrian descent, was called to the Syrian national team for their World Cup qualifying playoff against Australia in October. He didn’t play in either match against the Socceroos.
