Luciano Acosta has joined Liga MX club Atlas, his signing announced after reports from multiple media outlets, as the skillful Argentinean playmaker makes his next move following four seasons with D.C. United.
Acosta, 25, departs D.C. with 24 goals and 35 assists in 126 career regular-season matches (109 starts), and arrives at Atlas on a free transfer having played out his contract. Los Zorros finished the 2019 Apertura in 14th place, with the fourth-fewest goals scored in the league.
Acosta was one of MLS’s most exciting players when in top form, combining to great effect with Wayne Rooney in a partnership dubbed “LuchoRoo” as the Black-and-Red stormed up the standings in the latter half of 2018. He nearly joined French giants Paris Saint-Germain in a multi-million-dollar transfer a year ago only for the deal to fall through in the final hours.
But his influence on matches ebbed and flowed over his time in D.C. and he ended his United stint on the bench, as coach Ben Olsen shifted tactics to shore up his slumping side down the stretch in 2019.
